...Imagine, if you will, that you're dying.

It's not your fault, of course. You were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, your feet heavy and your heart aflame as you're led to the gallows, once beloved by all but now a mockery of who you once were. Fickle people jeer your name in some sick glee, and others might throw things at you, letting rotten fruit and cans bounce and roll off of your head.

But you ignore it. You're left to your thoughts, the only things you notice are your footfalls as you're brought closer to certain death.

Why? Why you?

Why is this happening to you? You never did anything to warrant this -- you never killed your father, you never committed the horrible acts of treason against this country that everyone accused you of.

No. You were innocent. And yet you were taking the blame.

The gallows grow ever-closer.

"Help me." You think. "I'll do anything. Give me the power to destroy the one who would kill my father and frame me! God...Satan...I don't care who!! Just get me out of this!!"

All of a sudden, before you are able to be brought to the noose, you feel an electrifying force, blasting your body. It's as though God himself struck his finger from the sky to smite you for the deeds you have not committed.

Are you dead?

No. As you think about your situation, you hear a voice:

"Son of Darkness, your call has been answered. Make a deal with us, and we will give all you wish for..."

...Welcome to the world of Tecmo's Deception, usually just known as "Deception" by fans.

Released in 1996 for the Sony Playstation, Deception is the sort of game that should have made Jack Thompson and other anti-videogame stooges promptly shit their pants and order its swift ban from shelves, or at least to slap 18 warning labels on the cover and have mandatory cattle proddings for all parents that allowed their kids within fifteen feet of it (which of course means my sister and I played it when it first came out).

Why?

Well, it's a game about murder in the name of Satan.

No. Really

You're...yourself, the kind prince of Zemekia. You have a stonking-hot girlfriend, a father who's awesome, a little brother to order around, and you're about to get married and have sparklebabies for all the world to see. But of course your brother, being the typical whiny younger brother who wants to screw your life over, kills your dad and orders your arrest, meanwhile imprisoning your fiance for all of his creepy fetishy needs.

Oh, and he sends you to die. There's that, too.

On your way to the gallows, you get kinda pissed off about this bullshit, and you ask any deity willing to listen to save your bacon and give you a means to get back at the little bitch who screwed you over (and promptly started a war between Zemekia and Angelio for all of his trouble). Too bad it's the Devil that listens, sending his sexy tart Astarte to send you to the Castle of the Damned, in which you're so kindly asked to be the castle's master, make a deal with El Diablo, and kill everyone. You know. For Justice?

And being the kind Prince that you are, you tell them to go fu--oh-ho, did I say kind? I meant that you completely go along with this and lure in and murder many, many innocents. Yeah, you're not the good guy in this tale. Using the house to your advantage (which you add rooms to at your leisure), you set up trap after trap to kill or capture your victims. You can either take their souls, sell their bodies for cash, or use them in fucked-up frankenstein-style experiments.

Though first, before we begin this story...we need a protagonist.

Someone ruthless, powerful, and who would be willing to do anything to get what he wants...

...

...

Yes, let's go with you.

So starting next time, Omega will begin his career as an absolute douchebag magical sparkleprince of the Kingdom of Zemekia-turned-mass murderer.

Joy!
